RAIL LINK TO DARWIN COMPLETED AFTER A CENTUARY OF DELAYS

A crowd of approximately 3000 well wishers,officials and dignitaries, clapped and cheered as the first train ever to travel across Australia, from south to north, left Adelaide on a hot Thursday morning, and after celebrations along the way, will arrive in Darwin Saturday.
The new 1420 km rail line from Alice Springs to Darwin was completed ahead of time and on budget, links all capital cities of Australia with rail.

Former Deputy Prime Minister Mr Tim Fischer was master of ceremonies and he looks on here as from the USA, Mr.David J. Lesar, Chairman of the Board, President and Chief Executive Officer of Halliburton addresses the large crowd.

Premier of South Australia Mr Mike Rann said it was now up to the private sector to use the rail link. He also mentioned that the State Government would co-operate fully with the Northern Territory Government to promote the railway in Australia and overseas.

Northern Territory Chief Minister Clare Martin said when the people of Darwin finally see the train arrive"The sceptics will just melt away"

With the final loading of the
NTFS refrigerated freight container the 1 km long train carrying 1300 tonnes of freight was complete for the journey to Darwin.

After the speeches by the dignitaries multi sets of coloured ribbons were cut and the first train to Darwin was finally launched and on it's way.

The two Freight Link engines feature extensive Australian Aboriginal art designs.

As the locomotives and crew cars were finally hooked up the band played a selection including Waltzing Matilda, and the theme from Rocky.
